Colleges and universities are among the highest across industries in regards to numbers of threats and breaches when it comes to data security.  With a large number of constituent groups from students, faculty, financial, and more, IT security is the top strategic issues facing college and university IT departments today. 

On a well-known hacker site, individuals charged students some two-thousand dollars to hack into university and college computers and change academic grades.  Although many students paid for these services, the website turned out to be a scam, and many were left a few thousand dollars short.  In another incident, a large southern university was subject to a brute force attack of the university's database which disclosed the Social Security numbers and e-mail addresses of almost 60, 000 students, alumni
and university employees.

These are just two examples of the numerous potential threats the higher education industry is challenged with today, and as federal and state regulations for information technology and privacy gain visibility from well-publicized incidents, all colleges and universities are coming under heavier scrutiny and regulation.  This results in a stronger review of the potential liability implications resulting from lack of compliance.  Higher Education has a demand for open and accessible networks, but that requirement generates an obligation on the part of each institution to protect the systems and the data they contain.
